Beginning May 19, the vacated Gainesville Health Care Center nursing home between the UF Health Shands E.R. and the 1329 Building parking garage will be torn down to become a surface lot primarily for patient valet parking. The lot is scheduled for completion in November.

Demolition will involve a large excavator with hydraulic shears used to “chew” bites off the building until it is completely torn down. This type of demolition is expected to take a couple of months. The site will be secured with a construction barrier and dust-control tools. Impact to traffic or access to facilities during this process is not anticipated.

The new surface lot will feature 164 spaces, including six spaces for people with disabilities, as well as new lights and landscaping.

An additional feature will include an eight foot wide covered walkway with a canopy from the south side of the 1329 Building — via the back doors of the 1329 Cafeteria — to the entrance of the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital. This walkway will be on the east side of the new lot.

The new surface lot will be completed in November and the walkway completed in the new year.
